Interview Tips Work at Home: $40,000 jobs | $60,000 jobs | $80,000 jobs

These are interview tips for the work at home job. Many work at home job interviews are conducted over the phone, however, you may find yourself making a personal appearance to get that at home job. Whether the interview is conducted on the phone or in person, it is recommended that you put on your interview suit. Why? Because your personality changes when your attire changes and you will find yourself feeling and sounding much more professional with your suit. Here are some important interview tips.

If the work at home interview is conducted over the phone:

  • Make sure your environment is completely noise free. Turn off your radio or television set, even if you don't think they can hear it. Make sure the kids are at nap time or find a sitter. Put the dogs in a safe environment where you will not hear any barking.
  • Turn on your smile. A smile can be "heard" over the phone. Enjoy your interview and the recruiter will enjoy it too. A shift in your body, like crossing your legs can also be heard, as can smoking, drinking, and any other activity that moves your body around.
  • Take your time in answering questions, don't let those short pauses scare you. The recruiter has made time for you, take advantage of that. Obviously, you do not want to pause for too long, but you do want to carefully choose your words.
  • Remember the mute button. If you need to cough, sneeze, or make any other sounds that can be considered annoying, excuse yourself for a moment, mute the line or put your hand over the mouthpiece firmly.
  • Do not tell the recruiter to "hold on" so you can answer the other line, or talk to a child who has wandered into the room. Make sure the children are safe and in another environment with an adult to avoid this situation. If you normally talk to family or friends during the interview time, make sure to tell them not to call at that time and for at least two hours.
  • Take the day or a few hours off for the interview if you have another work at home position already.
  • Make sure your phone is completely charged and ready for a very long conversation. If you have a phone that others have told you that can not hear you well, do not use that phone. If you have cordless phones, have a spare ready and charged completely in case you run out of battery with the first one.
  • Have your resume in front of you and all the details of any previous employers. Your interviewer will be asking questions regarding your past and you want to make sure you use the same dates that they have on the resume you already sent them.
  • After the interview, have a treat planned out for yourself to give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Interviews can be stressful, try to reward yourself after each one, especially if you think you aced it.

If your work at home interview is conducted in person:

  • Put on your best business clothing. Appearance is number one, as your interviewer wants to know what kind of person you are on a daily basis. Do not wear perfume or perfumed lotions, as many people these days have allergies, and this could offend the recruiter.
  • Have a second resume to hand to them with you in a manila file folder and another copy for yourself. If it has been updated, make sure you let them know that it has. The manila folder will give the appearance that you are organized and prepared. Be sure to bring a pen or pencil and a notepad to take notes on.
  • Ask questions about the open position. Write the notes and remember the recruiter can likely see everything you are writing. Do not doodle. Make bulleted points of the recruiters answers, this will give the impression of organization.
  • Bring a small briefcase or portfolio instead of a purse. This also will give the appearance of professionalism and organization.
  • Turn off your cell phone as soon as you walk in the door. Cell phones going off would be considered rude and unprofessional. If you have a sick child or really must have your phone on for emergency purposes, let the interviewer know your child is ill and you will have your phone on "vibrate." Tell your family and friends that typically call you at this time of day to refrain from doing so from the time of the interview for at least two hours.
  • Turn on that professional attitude. Interviewers reviewing work at home professionals are looking for self starters that have everything in order and organized. They are looking for a very high work ethic.
  • Look the interviewer in the eye. Don't stare them down, but be sure to look into their eyes periodically through the full conversation. If it is difficult to meet eyes, focus on their eyebrows or cheeks, right above or below the pupil of the eye. This will give them the impression that you are confident.
  • Sit up straight, just like your mother always told you. Professionals don't slouch. Your rear end should be at the back of the chair, your back should be straight and your hands folded on the desk in front of you or on the arm of the chair or taking notes. If you cross your legs, cross them towards the interviewer. When reading body language, this will indicate that you are comfortable or like the person you are speaking with.
  • Don't lie. Recruiters are trained in body language and will be able to detect most items that you don't believe yourself.
  • Don't roll your eyes or make negative faces. Negativity about your previous position or previous employer will certainly put you on the bottom of the hiring list. Negative faces will stick in the recruiters head. Smile when it is appropriate and keep a straight professional face the rest of the time.
  • Be enthusiastic about the position you applied for. Have examples of what you would like to accomplish for the hiring company.
  • Before and after the interview, shake hands with the recruiter. At the end, be sure to thank her for her time and let her know that you will be available for follow up.
