Becoming a student tutor is a great way to make money while still in school and also a great work at home job. As with all jobs for teens, safety should be considered first and foremost. Make sure there is always an adult present in the home before scheduling time with another student. You will want to also only tutor students who are at least one grade or more behind your own.

Tutors make a good amount of money if they are skilled in the subject and have a great customer service attitude. Take some time to read about a high school student who started his own tutoring company and after graduating college, he employs 130 tutors and makes a six figure income. There is a newspaper article about Erik Kimel's Teens Tutor Teens in the Washington Post published on September 7, 2008. Kimel's tutors average about $13.00 per hour.

Student Tutor Marketing

When you market yourself as a tutor, you will need compelling reasons for other students and their parents to use you rather than going to a larger tutoring company. Here are some ideas that will help you market your student tutoring business:

  • One on One attention: the student will receive 100% of the tutor's attention. With larger tutoring firms, there is only one tutor for a group of students. Also, a second tutor may be present, however, they are split among each student and make rounds in the room. The student only gets a percentage of the tutor's time, just like in a classroom.
  • Consistency: the student will have the same tutor each and every session. This allows the student and tutor to build a working relationship and the tutor will be able to gear teaching towards the student's needs personally. A larger tutoring firm will have different tutors and substitutes, based upon a schedule.
  • Personalized curriculum: having one on one sessions allows the tutor to gear each session towards the student's personal needs.
  • Affordability: student tutors come at a much lower expense than a larger firm. There are no required initial tests that the student will need to take for "placement."
  • Peer teaching: students are typically more comfortable learning from someone closer to their age.

 
Tutor Conduct

To keep your student tutoring business thriving, you need to reflect a business attitude and show responsibility.

  • Introduce yourself to the student and let him/her know how to address you.
  • Learn to pronounce the student's name correctly. Write it down for your records and get the correct spelling from the parent before you meet the student.
  • Establish that the student will be able to count on you, and let him/her know you will be his tutor on a regular basis.
  • Be friendly and keep yourself open to questions. No question is ever dumb, and every question the student has on the current topic should be asked without hesitation. Welcome the questions completely.
  • Do not discuss anything personal, such as parents, home situations, or siblings. If you want to get to know a little about the student, keep the conversation on pets, video games, or other topics that are not controversial.
  • Accept your student as he or she is—be nonjudgmental. Some students may be a little difficult in the beginning if their parents force the tutoring, be understanding and be positive.
  • Use positive reinforcement as much as possible:
    • That was excellent
    • You are good at that
    • I am glad you chose me as a tutor, I look forward to seeing you next week.
  • Let the student know you will see him/her next week at the same time. Show him/her you are consistent and want to help.
  • Always end on a positive note.

 
One Hour Session

The best scenario for tutoring is that you and the student get one full hour each session to work on one subject. Here is what a typical tutoring session will look like:

  • Review last tutoring session assignment
  • Opening activity
  • Instructional Goal 1
  • Instructional Goal 2
  • Closing activity
  • Follow-up assignment

When you determine which subject you are interested in tutoring in and which grade level you would like to tutor for, you will need to decide whether you are doing homework help or if you would like to create lessons of your own.
