Work at Home Jobs for Teens > Babysitting

Babysitting is a great way to make money while still in school and also a great work at home job. As with all jobs for teens, safety should be considered first and foremost. Make sure there is always an adult present in the home before scheduling time with a new parent for babysitting.

Babysitters make a good amount of money if they love children, provide activities, and are dependable. Most of your clients will come from word of mouth, from parent to parent. An excellent babysitter is hard to find, so once a parent finds you, they will brag about you and always want you to watch their children when they are away from home. Parents need a sense of security that their child is safe and happy while they are away.

A Good Babysitter

To keep your babysitting business thriving, you need to reflect a business attitude and show responsibility and above all, you must provide a safe environment for the child.

  • Be responsible: you are responsible for the child's health and safety. You must not allow others to care for the child while you are in charge, unless it is your parent. Your time on the clock is for the child, not for television or video games.
  • Be dependable: if you agree to take a babysitting job, you must be available at the agreed time. Do not ever cancel a job, unless you seriously fall ill with a contagious disease or you have an emergency of some sort. The parent has made plans, and if their babysitter is not available last minute, it could cost them a client, their job, or something important.
  • Have love for the child: do not agree to babysit for a child you do not get along with. Children can sense negativity and they will know if you like them or not. If you do not, they are more likely to misbehave and/or cry.
  • Be in good health: if you have a cold or the flu, make sure to give the parents plenty of notice (a day or more) that you will not be available for any jobs. A parent will appreciate if you let them know you are ill, as they will not want their child to get ill as well.
  • Show good manners and respect: act courteously and show your best manners, not only to the parents, but also to the child. If you show respect, you will get it in return.
  • Safety is always number 1: child-proof any room you will have the child in. Be sure to have plug covers and cabinet locks. Make sure your mini-blind cords are completely out of reach. Do not have any plastic bags in reach. Do not allow the child in the kitchen or bathroom alone, there are too many dangers they may find.
  • Treat this as your business: because it is! Have planned activities, agree on payment schedules, and have the parent fill out a form for safety (with emergency numbers, food and medicine allergies, etc)

Your Babysitting Business

This is a business you are starting. Someone is paying you for your time and your expertise, and you will be charging them. Make sure they get what they pay for and make sure you get paid.

  • When agreeing to a babysitting job, you need to restate the time and day of the job. The next sentence you will give is "my charge is ______ per hour. At ____ hours, it will be _____ dollars." Do not be shy about this. Also, if you feel you need to, let them know that if they are late, they will need to pay another hour charge (or whatever amount you feel is fair).
  • If you have another plan after the babysitting job is over, you need to communicate to the parent that it is very important they pick up their child on time. Let them know you have another item on your schedule you must attend and can not be late for.

Information you Need

As a babysitter, you will need information from the parent before they leave you with their child. You may want to tell them to arrive 15 minutes in advance so they have time to fill out a little sheet for you. They will appreciate this extra step and it will make them feel much safer leaving the child with you.

  • Emergency Numbers (for fire, police, etc if your area does not have 911)
  • Parent's home phone number
  • Parent's home address
  • Name and number of the place the parents will be while you have their child
  • Parents cell phone number
  • At least one emergency contact besides the parent with name and phone number
  • Meal information
