| Going Green is a great way to advertise to your potential customers and partners. Working at home can help save our environment in more ways than you may think. When looking into allowing staff members to work from home full time or part time, justification will be necessary. Going Green will attract potential customers and clients and will help boost your company's standing in community service. |

In definition, the term Going Green is: adapting a lifestyle so as to do less damage to the environment. Going Green is not a topic your corporation would want to ignore or overlook. It may seem like a way to gain positive advertising (and it is), but more importantly, our governments and scientists have real concerns about the earth and how we affect it.
"July 6-9 2008, the US participated in the 34th G-8 Summit in Hokkaido Toyako Japan. The Group of Eight (G8) is an international forum for the governments of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union. With the 2008 G8 Declaration on Environment and Climate Change, the G8 leaders agreed on the need for the world to cut carbon emissions blamed for global warming by at least 50 percent by 2050 and for each nation to set its own target for a nearer term." * University of Maryland
It stands to reason then, our most important mission in this topic is to cut carbon emissions. We achieve this by mainly cutting drive time, saving electricity and eliminating wasteful purchases. |

Each of your employees must get into their car, on a bus, or take some sort of transportation to work. Very few are lucky enough to be close enough to walk or take a bicycle.
For each employee who reduces their work day from 5 days per week to working at home, your company has saved 5.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the environment per year. For exact calculations, please visit The USA Government Environmental Protection Agency's Emission Facts sheet. |

In the typical office environment, people work for money and don't particularly keep the company's money on their mind throughout the day. Waste occurs more frequently, as the employee doesn't have to pay for office supplies from their own pocket. When an employee works at home, he/she is on agreement on how many office supplies he is allotted per week or month, or he is willing to supply his own. If he runs out of supplies, he will need to drive to the office to retrieve more, signing paperwork or explaining the need, or he will need to drive to his local office supply to pay for more supplies.
When your employees work from home, they will automatically be continually conscious of their use and waste of supplies. A wasted ream of paper at work for one report will become 1/6 of that ream, as they will be more leery of printing until they are absolutely sure they have everything to final draft quality.
The environment will suffer much less waste on:
- Furnishings
- Paper
- Paper Clips
- Staples
- Rubber Bands
- Pens and Pencils
- Needless office supplies that end up on the "want" list
Any consumable product that has been made into chains and ended up on the floor or in the trash can will no longer need to be purchased. |

Your home and your company can participate in vermicomposting. See The Worm Guide from the California government. |

Obviously, an employee will utilize electricity, whether at home or in the office. However, if an employee travels to work, it stands to reason that he/she is using electricity in both environments at the same time.
When leaving a house or apartment/flat, depending upon the outside temperature, air conditioning or heating must remain on to some capacity. Those who are not environmentally conscious will leave the temperature steady without adjustments. Heating must remain on, so pipes will not freeze, indoor plants will not die, and pets remain healthy. Air Conditioning must remain on for close to the same reasons. There are those that also may leave a television set on, lights on, and other electronics for many reasons.
So, as the employee travels to work, he is still using electricity in his home, but is now doubling up while he is at work in another building. |

Each employee will produce waste throughout the day. According to the Federal Environmental Executive, 1.6 lbs of waste is generated per employee per day. If the employee works 5 days per week, this adds up to 400 lbs of waste per year.
Your company can calculate waste (and the elimination of waste) per work at home employee using the Waste Stream sheet.
This waste takes in account many factors, some of which will be eliminated by changing the environment of the employee from office to home. Your company can measure it's success of reducing paper usage. You can also see some numbers on saving your company money by reducing waste at the Environmental Protection Agency's site |

While working on your corporate image and advertising Going Green to your prospects, you can also add your company's dedication to promoting family life. In the US, an employee wastes over 55 minutes per day driving according to AAA. Most of this time that was used going to work can be allocated towards family life, such as seeing children off to school, having time to play a board game after school and before dinner needs to be prepared.
