Trapped Water

Things float on water, things sink under water, but have you ever made a water sandwich?

Our Science Experiment

We are going to trap water between two liquids in a jar.

What you need

2 tablespoons of oil
2 tablespoons of water
2 tablespoons of honey
a skinny small jar with a lid

How to perform this experiment

Pour the oil, water, and honey into the jar and cover it with the lid.

Watch!

The honey sinks to the bottom and the oil floats on top, the water just hangs out in the middle.

Why did it do that?

The honey is denser than water and the oil is less dense. Dense means it weighs more at the same amount.

I wonder what would happen if

I wonder what would happen if I shake up the liquid (with the lid very tightly screwed on). Do you think the water will settle in the middle again?
